■■ A makeup artist working on the movie, 40-year-old Bill Turner, was quite taken by Kaori and asked her out. Just two weeks later, as the romance progressed, he proposed to her! Of course, this was all a bit too sudden but with Steve McQueen singing Bill's praises to Kaori, wedding bells would soon chime. Funnily enough, it took the police to clinch the deal. One night, Kaori was picked up by local authorities for breaking Hong Kong's curfew laws. Bill came to the rescue to smooth things over with the authorities. Although she has done work on such hit TV series as Ally McBeal and ER, it is Alias (broadcast here at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesdays on NHK BS-11) that garnered her, along with two of her co-workers, the 2003 Emmy award for Outstanding Makeup For A Series (Non-Prosthetic). That is not the only connection this remarkable 69-year-old woman keeps with her Japanese roots. Thanks to her exposure to the outside world through and her late husband Bill, who died ten years ago, and her work as both a dancer and a makeup artist, she objects to the close-mindedness of the Japanese government and its treatment of expatriates.
