■ Ever wonder if Japan has its own Charles Lindbergh? Well, it does but, unlike Lindbergh, his home is the sea not the skies. Kenichi Horie is to solo sailing what Lindbergh was to solo flight. |

■■ He got his start on a crazy 94-day solo sailing journey in 1962 across the Pacific Ocean. This wild adventure, made at the tender age of 23, saw Horie sail into San Francisco Bay to a surprised bunch of sailors and other nautical aficionados out on the waters enjoying the day. The intrepid Japanese adventurer had actually entered American waters without a passport, little English and even less money on his person, but then San Francisco Mayor George Christopher greeted the interloper with open arms. The mayor, a Greek immigrant, felt affinity with Horie and gave him a hero's welcome and the key to the city. One local businessman even gave Horie a whole new wardrobe! |

■■■ Back in Japan, Horie's trip also became big news and his life would be changed forever. After that initial voyage he became obsessed with taking on greater challenges. In 1974, he circumnavigated the globe on his own without docking even once. Four years later, he began a four-year circumnavigation of the globe but this time longitudinally. In 1985, he decided to try a much shorter trip, from Hawaii to Japan, but added a twist by using a solar-powered vessel. |

■■■■ In 1989 he retraced his original journey of 1962 but starting from U.S. shores near that famous symbol of the City by the Bay―the Golden Gate Bridge. He also did this particular voyage on one of the smallest open sea yachts (just 2.8 meters in length) in existence. Ten years later, he retraced the same cross-Pacific jaunt from the Bay Area, but in a boat made from recycled whiskey barrels! The sails, in keeping with the recycling theme, were made from recycled plastic bottles. |

■■■■■ Horie squeezed in another Hawaii to Japan trip one year to thank the islanders there who helped him on many of his cross-Pacific voyages. Yet somehow, some way, he is always drawn back to San Francisco. His latest adventure is, in fact, being done to honor the late Mayor Christopher who died in Sept. 2001 at the age of 92. He is set this coming October to hit the high seas aboard the Suntory Mermaid III yacht. As the name suggests his four-time sponsor Suntory is adding its financial support for this trip as are other sponsors including the Embassy of Chile. |

■■■■■■ This 50,000-kilometer voyage will take Horie from Shin-Nishinomiya Harbor in Kobe eastward to Hawaii then down south around Cape Horn and across the Atlantic. After crossing that great expanse of ocean, he'll round Africa at the Cape of Good Hope continuing across the Indian Ocean. Once past Tasmania he'll then head north on the final leg skirting Guam before cruising into the Shin-Nishinomiya port some time in May. Then who knows how long this spry 62-year-old sailor will be able to stand being onshore? With Horie there is always yet another voyage awaiting him on the horizon. |
